CDCP Renewal Deadline Is Coming Up Fast

If you’re currently on the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) — or if you’re basically the unofficial paperwork manager for a parent, grandparent, or family member — this is your reminder that the renewal deadline is coming up very fast.

Existing CDCP members need to renew their coverage by June 1, 2026.

A lot of people assume that once they’re approved, the coverage just automatically continues forever unless something major changes. Unfortunately, that’s not how this one works. Members have to complete the yearly renewal process to stay covered.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?

If the deadline is missed, coverage ends on June 30, 2026.

That part matters more than people realize because Health Canada does not backdate coverage if there’s a lapse. So if someone has a dental appointment booked in July — even something routine like a cleaning or filling — they could end up paying the full cost themselves if the renewal wasn’t completed in time.

And just as a heads-up for anyone trying to plan future dental work: regular checkups, cleanings, and basic procedures are generally covered, but standard orthodontics usually are not. Braces are only considered in limited medically necessary cases that require pre-approval.

Renewing Is Usually Pretty Simple

The good news is that renewing is usually pretty straightforward.

Most people can complete the process online through their My Service Canada Account, while others can renew over the phone.

Before starting, it helps to have:

  • 2025 taxes filed
  • Your SIN ready
  • Your current mailing address and information updated

Honestly, this is probably one of those things worth taking care of sooner rather than later. Waiting until the last day could mean slower systems, long phone wait times, or unnecessary stress if something goes wrong.

Five minutes now could save a pretty painful dental bill later this summer.
