Free Shelter Support Worker Micro-Credential Program

Are you interested in a career working in the homeless or family violence shelter sectors?

Check out this FREE micro-credential program offered by the Manitoba Association of Women’s Shelters.

This 6-month program expected to begin in November 2023 is an excellent opportunity for potential shelter workers to connect with a local family violence (FV) or homeless shelter. Completion of the full program and work placement may lead to employment at a shelter.

The program will focus on trauma-informed care, consisting of:
(1) A 90-hour foundations training in basic shelter terminology and concepts
(2) A 90-hour fundamentals training in skills needed to work in a shelter
(3) A 90-hour specialization course in homeless or family violence shelters (participant’s choice)
(4) A 20-hour work placement at a shelter (for those that don’t already work at a shelter)
(5) A 20-hour capstone project—research & propose solutions to a topic concerning the shelter

You will need:
(1) Access to a computer & internet (the program can help you obtain a computer from Computers for Schools)
(2) Commitment to completing the 6-month program. The time commitment will be about 10-15 hours per week. Most work will be done on the students’ own time, with 1 live session per week.

(4) Selected applicants will interview with an FV/homeless shelter in their community.
