Birds Hill Provincial Park West Gate Closure: July 22-26, 2024

Attention all nature enthusiasts and park visitors! If you’re planning a trip to Birds Hill Provincial Park between July 22 and July 26, 2024, be prepared for some changes. The west gate entrance on Provincial Trunk Highway (PTH) 59 will be closed during this period to accommodate a film production. But don’t worry, you can still access the park through the east gate on Provincial Road (PR) 206.

The closure is due to an exciting development: a film production is taking place in the park. It has been confirmed that the much-anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, “The Long Walk”, will be filming at Birds Hill. This dystopian story, set in a near-future America, follows a grueling walking contest with deadly stakes, making the serene yet expansive landscapes of Birds Hill Provincial Park an ideal filming location.

What You Need to Know

  • Access: Use the east gate on PR 206. Detours will be clearly marked from PTH 59, redirecting traffic from the south along Garven Road (PR 213) and from the north along PTH 44.
  • Permits: To minimize delays, purchase and print your park vehicle permits in advance from Manitoba eLicensing or from local retailers.
  • Updates: Stay informed with the latest maps and updates on the Manitoba Parks website.

The Long Walk: A Perfect Fit

Stephen King's The Long Walk is a dystopian novel that requires a picturesque yet eerie setting, perfect for the grueling journey undertaken by its characters. Birds Hill Provincial Park, with its expansive landscapes, dense forests, and serene yet haunting atmosphere, provides an ideal backdrop for such a story. The park’s varied terrain and natural beauty could bring a visual depth to the film, enhancing the intense and emotional journey of the characters.

Plan Your Visit

Despite the west gate closure, Birds Hill Provincial Park remains a fantastic destination for outdoor activities. Whether you’re camping, hiking, or simply enjoying the beach, the park offers a variety of experiences for all visitors.

Stay tuned for more updates and happy exploring!
