Free Dental Care at U of M Dental School — Here’s the Scoop

Winnipeg, October 2025 — For anyone in Manitoba who’s been putting off a trip to the dentist because it’s just too pricey, here’s some genuinely good news: the University of Manitoba’s Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry is now offering free dental care for eligible patients.

It’s all thanks to a federal grant, and honestly, it couldn’t come at a better time.

What’s happening

The dental school received a $336,000 grant from Health Canada, and that money is being used to cover 100% of dental costs for people who qualify.

If you’re part of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and only get 40% or 60% coverage at regular clinics, the U of M will top that up to full coverage. Even folks without any dental insurance might qualify, depending on how many spots are left.

The program runs until March 31, 2026, or until the funds are gone — whichever comes first.

Dr. Anastasia Kelekis-Cholakis, the dental college dean, said the goal is simple: help more Manitobans access care they might otherwise skip because of the cost.

Who’s eligible and what’s included

People who already have partial CDCP coverage or no coverage at all are the main groups who can benefit.

The clinic offers everything from checkups and cleanings to fillings, dentures, and implants — all done by dental and hygiene students working under supervision. Treatments can take a bit longer than at a regular clinic, but it’s safe, professional, and a great deal — especially when it’s free.

Why this matters

Even with the new federal dental plan, many people still end up paying out of pocket — and that adds up fast. This U of M program helps fill that gap, giving more Manitobans a chance to get the care they need without stressing about the bill.

It also keeps things busy for the dental students who rely on real patients to complete their training — so it’s a win-win all around.

How to get started

  • Check your CDCP coverage (40% or 60%) or confirm you don’t have any insurance.
  • Go to the U of M Dentistry website and fill out the “Become a Patient” form.
  • Ask about the free-care program when applying.
  • Book your screening once the clinic confirms eligibility.

Spots will likely go fast, so anyone interested should apply sooner rather than later.

Final Thoughts

This kind of thing doesn’t come around often — free dental care from a trusted clinic right here in Winnipeg. For people who’ve been putting off cleanings or dental work because it just wasn’t in the budget, this is a real chance to catch up.

It’s one of those small local programs that makes a big impact — helping people smile a little easier (literally).
