Heads Up Winnipeg: Watch Out for Stolen Licence Plates (Aug. 27, 2025 Update)

Just a quick heads-up for anyone driving around the city — Winnipeg police have been noticing more stolen licence plates lately, and it’s becoming a bit of a problem. Thieves are grabbing plates and using them on other vehicles to make it harder for police to track stolen cars or other crimes.

Why this matters

It might not sound like a big deal at first, but stolen plates are often swapped around between different cars, which makes it really tough for anyone to figure out what’s legit and what’s not. In some cases, stolen plates have been tied to bigger issues like break-ins or drug activity.

A few easy ways to protect your plates

  • Use locking or anti-theft plate screws. Super cheap and easy to grab at a hardware store.
  • Park where it’s bright and visible. Dark corners are usually the first spots thieves look for.
  • Check your plates often. If a screw looks loose or the plate doesn’t sit right, it’s worth a second look.
  • Report it right away. The faster it’s flagged, the less chance it gets misused.

If it happens to you

  • If you spot your plate on a vehicle that’s moving, call 911 — don’t try to approach it yourself.
  • If it’s on a parked vehicle or you just have info to pass along, call Winnipeg Police Service (204-986-6222) or Crime Stoppers (204-786-8477).
