Portage and Main Reopens to Pedestrians on June 27, 2025 — Finally!

Big news for Winnipeg—Portage and Main is officially reopening to pedestrians on Friday, June 27, 2025. After being closed to foot traffic for over 45 years, people will finally be able to cross one of the city’s most iconic intersections again. It’s a pretty big deal, and it’s been a long time coming.

🛠️ A Quick Backstory

If you didn’t know, Portage and Main has been closed to pedestrians since 1979, which means nearly five decades of detouring underground.

The city gave the go-ahead to reopen it in March 2024, mostly because fixing up the underground concourse was getting expensive—and also because a lot of folks felt it was time to bring some life back to the street level.

Work started in November 2024, and the plan was to have it ready for the public by June 27, which lines up perfectly with the city’s new transit network launch on the same day. As of March, everything was still on track and within budget.

🎉 What’s Happening on June 27?

  • You Can Actually Walk Across It Now: The barriers are down, and there are now crosswalks at all four corners. The area’s getting wider sidewalks, new streetlights, better traffic signals, and fresh transit stops just in time for the Primary Transit Network launch on the same day.
  • Downtown Will Feel More Connected: This change makes it way easier to get between buildings like 201 Portage, 360 Main, Winnipeg Square, and Portage Place. No more maze-like underground routes if you don’t want to take them—everything above ground just feels more natural now.
  • People Are Really Looking Forward to This: From what’s been said online and in conversations, a lot of people are genuinely excited. Even the mayor mentioned how much positive feedback he’s getting from folks downtown. It really seems like this could help bring some life back to the area.

⚠️ A Heads-Up Before You Go

Some road and sidewalk work is still happening, so don’t be surprised if you run into a few detours or cones.

The underground concourse is being reworked too, so there might be some rerouting for a bit longer while they finish things up.

⭐ Why This Matters

  • It gives the space back to people—Portage and Main hasn’t been walkable for a long, long time, and this change puts people back at the centre of it.
  • It’s happening alongside a major transit upgrade, which should help make the whole area more accessible.
  • It’s great for local businesses—more people walking by means more chances for nearby shops and restaurants to get some well-deserved love.

📅 Dates to Keep in Mind

  • Friday, June 27, 2025 — Portage and Main officially reopens to pedestrian traffic
  • June 29 — Winnipeg’s new Primary Transit Network goes live
  • Tuesday, July 1, 2025 — The whole area will be fully ready just in time for Canada Day festivities

✅ A Few Ideas

  • Take a stroll across the intersection once it opens—it’s kind of a historic moment
  • Snap some pics or video, especially if you remember what it used to be like
  • Stop by some of the shops and spots nearby and show them some support
