Here’s something pretty great for anyone in Manitoba thinking about getting into the trades. The Winnipeg Industrial Skills Training Centre (WISTC) is running a FREE 6-month Welding & Metal Fabrication program, and it’s completely free for those who qualify. The next session kicks off January 5, 2026, so there’s still time to apply!

Welding and metal work are always in demand across Manitoba and Canada, and this program gives people a chance to learn practical, hands-on skills that can lead to steady, good-paying jobs.

The “MAC Program” (Metal & Fabrication) runs full-time, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., for about 24 weeks. It includes:

  • Industrial Metal Fabrication & Welding
  • WHMIS safety training
  • Shop safety and best practices
  • Trade math and blueprint reading
  • Intro to metals and resume prep

About 60 percent of the training is hands-on shop time, and another 25 percent is a real-world work placement.

Eligibility: Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, at least 18 years old, and able to read/write English and handle Grade 10 math. Applicants must be unemployed or working less than 20 hours per week, or have a current or past EI claim.

Cost: Free for those who qualify. WISTC is a non-profit training centre with over 43 years of experience helping Manitobans build trade skills.

How to Apply:
Click the button below to apply. Seats are limited to about 16 people per session. After applying, there’s an aptitude test and interview process before the program starts.

Training begins January 5, 2026. Don’t wait too long — the spots fill up fast!
