Free Welding & Metal Fab Training (April 20 – October 16, 2026)

The Winnipeg Industrial Skills Training Centre (WISTC)—those folks over on King Edward—are doing another intake for their free 6-month Welding & Metal Fab program.

This next session runs from April 20 to October 16, 2026, and if you qualify, the government basically picks up the whole tab for your training.

What’s the catch?

No catch, really—you just have to be willing to show up and put in the work.

It’s a 24-week grind, but you aren't stuck at a desk. You’re in the shop about 60% of the time, so you're actually learning to spark an arc and build stuff, not just staring at a whiteboard.

They even toss in a two-week job placement at a local business, which is huge for actually getting hired afterward.

You’ll pick up the “boring but important” stuff too, like:

  • Blueprints
  • Shop safety
  • That specific kind of math you actually use on the floor

Who Can Sign Up?

This is the MAC program, which is basically for us locals looking for a solid career path.

You’re likely a shoe-in if:

  • You’re on EI (or were recently): Even if your claim ran out a few years ago (up to 5 years!), you’re usually still eligible.
  • You’re “underemployed”: If you’re working less than 20 hours a week and trying to find something full-time, this is for you.
  • The Basics: You’re 18+, can handle “shop math” (about Grade 10 level), and you don't mind being on your feet all day.

It’s a shop environment—so yeah, it’s loud and you’ll get a bit dirty—but that’s where the good paychecks are.

Why This Matters & How to Apply

Let’s be real: Manitoba is always screaming for welders. Whether it’s trailers, buses, or heavy machinery, there’s always work here.

Getting a career-ready skill for $0 out of pocket is a massive win.

WISTC has been around for over 40 years, so they aren't some “fly-by-night” operation—they’re a non-profit that actually cares about getting people into the workforce.

How to jump on it

Don’t sit on this—they only take about 16 people per group, and those spots disappear faster than a Slurpee in July.

  1. Fill out the form at wistc.ca/application.
  2. Show up for an info session: They’ll tell you the “no-nonsense” version of what the 6 months will look like.
  3. Aptitude test: You’ll have to do a quick reading and math check-in. Don't sweat it too much; it’s just to make sure you won't struggle with the measurements once you’re in the shop.

If you know someone who’s handy or just needs a break, send them this. It could be exactly what they need to turn things around.
