Celebrate Asian Heritage Month in Winnipeg with a Diverse Range of Events!

May is Asian Heritage Month, and the Asian Heritage Society of Manitoba (AHS) has curated a program filled with exciting events to commemorate the occasion. Here's a glimpse into what awaits you:

Opening Ceremony & Performances:

  • Kick off the festivities on Wednesday, May 1st, at the Manitoba Legislative Assembly from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. Join dignitaries, community members, and AHS representatives for opening remarks and greetings, followed by captivating performances.

Culinary Delights:

  • (EVENT REGISTRATION CLOSED) Japanese Cooking Demonstration by Chef Sadao Ono, the executive chef who brought the tradition of sushi preparation to Winnipeg! From comforting Miso soup to refreshing Sunomono (cucumber salad), flavorful Japanese curry dishes, and the art of sushi-making, Chef Ono, with commentator, Junko Bailey will guide us through a feast of flavours. .

Laughter & Entertainment:

  • Get ready for an evening of side-splitting comedy at the Asian Heritage Month Comedy Show on Saturday, May 11th at the One Eleven Lounge (EEC) from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. Hosted by Jié Yang, the show features local Asian Manitoban comedians alongside The Lady Lumps musical duo and headliner Vong Show (age restriction applies).

Literary Explorations:

  • On Thursday, May 23rd, head to the Fort Garry Library at 10:30 am for the Asian Canadian Writer's Showcase. Vietnamese Canadian author Linda Trinh will share readings that delve into themes of identity, cultural background, and spirituality.

Engaging Symposium for Students:

  • High school students can participate in the Asian Heritage High School Symposium on May 23rd at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. This full-day event offers a chance to explore Asian Canadian history through exhibits, career panels, workshops, and interactive sessions.

A Taste of Asia:

  • The Forks comes alive with the Taste of Asia on Saturday and Sunday, May 25th and 26th, from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm each day. Immerse yourself in Asian Canadian culture through live performances, martial arts demonstrations, and a vibrant food truck and market scene.

Film Fanatics Rejoice!:

  • From Friday, May 24th to Sunday, May 26th, the Winnipeg Art Gallery WAG-Qaumajuq presents the FascinAsian Film Festival. This culturally focused event brings screenings, workshops, and an awards ceremony, celebrating Asian contributions to cinema.

Virtual National Showcase:

  • Cap off Asian Heritage Month with the CanAsian Network's virtual showcase on Wednesday, May 29th, from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. This online event features captivating performances from six Canadian cities, including Winnipeg's very own Red Lotus Korean Dance Group.

Engaging Symposium for Students:

  • High school students can participate in the Asian Heritage High School Symposium on May 23rd at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. This full-day event offers a chance to explore Asian Canadian history through exhibits, career panels, workshops, and interactive sessions.
