Cinephiles rejoice! Ditch the subscription fees and unlock a treasure trove of cinematic gems, all thanks to your Winnipeg Public Library card. Yes, you read that right. Two incredible streaming platforms, Hoopla and Kanopy, offer Winnipeg residents a mountain of free movies just waiting to be devoured. From award-winning documentaries to indie darlings, classic cinema to foreign films, these platforms cater to every taste bud.

Ready to embark on your movie marathon? Here’s the lowdown:

Hoopla:

  • Hollywood Hits & Hidden Gems: Dive into a vast library of blockbusters, independent films, and cult classics. Think action-packed thrillers, heartwarming comedies, and thought-provoking dramas. You’ll even find TV shows, documentaries, and music videos for a truly diverse viewing experience.
  • No Download, No Sweat: Watch directly through your web browser or download movies and shows for offline viewing. Perfect for long commutes or cozy nights in.
  • Limited Borrowing: Borrow 5 items/month and play them as often as you like within your loan period of 3 days for movies and TV and 7 days for music.

Kanopy:

  • Indie & International Flavor: Kanopy shines with its curated collection of independent, arthouse, and foreign films. Discover hidden gems from around the world, explore iconic directors’ oeuvres, and broaden your cinematic horizons.
  • Educational Edge: Kanopy’s offerings extend beyond entertainment. Dive into documentaries covering history, politics, current affairs, and more. It’s like a film festival with a bonus side of learning!
  • Simultaneous Streaming: Unlike Hoopla, Kanopy allows for simultaneous streaming on multiple devices. Host a movie night with friends or catch up on separate screens without any fuss.
  • Limited Borrowing: At the beginning of each month, you will receive 15 tickets to be used during that month. (Tickets do not roll over from month to month.) Each title will use a certain number of tickets. The number of tickets and viewing period will be clearly labelled for each title. Most movies are 2 tickets.
