Fake Taxi Scam: Protect Yourself from Debit Card Skimming

In a recent surge of fraudulent activities, Winnipeg residents have been targeted by a sophisticated fake taxi scam. This alarming scheme involves fraudsters posing as taxi operators and passengers, using vehicles with counterfeit TAXI signs to deceive unsuspecting individuals.

The Scam Unveiled

Fraudsters have been posing as taxi operators and passengers, using vehicles with fake TAXI signs to deceive unsuspecting bystanders. These fake taxis are often seen in high-traffic areas such as mall parking lots. The scam typically unfolds when a person acting as a passenger exits the vehicle and approaches a bystander, claiming that the taxi does not accept cash. They then ask the bystander to use their debit card to pay for the fare in exchange for cash.

Once the victim hands over their card, the fraudsters use surreptitious skimming techniques to withdraw far more money than the alleged fare amount. This method not only drains the victim’s bank account but also leaves them feeling violated and helpless.

How to Protect Yourself

To avoid falling victim to this fake taxi scam, it’s essential to be aware of a few key points:

● Verify Taxi Legitimacy: All licensed taxis in Winnipeg have a legitimate name decal on their doors (e.g., Duffy’s, Unicity, Blueline) and a three-digit taxi identification number both inside and outside the vehicle. Always check for these identifiers before engaging with a taxi.

● Cash Payments: Remember that all legitimate taxis in Winnipeg accept cash for fares. If a taxi operator claims otherwise, it’s a red flag.

● Guard Your Cards: Never allow strangers to borrow your debit or credit card, even with the promise of cash in return. Debit and credit cards can easily be used in scams where your PIN is surreptitiously acquired and repeatedly used without your knowledge.

● Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter a suspicious transaction or believe you have been targeted by this fake taxi scam, report it to the police or through the city’s complaints line at 311.

Community Awareness

The Financial Crimes Unit, along with local taxi companies and ride-sharing services, is working to create awareness about this emerging fraud. Initiatives like “Know Your Taxi” provide valuable information to help residents confirm the legitimacy of service providers.

By staying informed and cautious, Winnipeggers can protect themselves from falling prey to these deceitful tactics. Spread the word and help keep our community safe from fraud.

Stay safe, Winnipeg!
