Honouring Our Mothers Circles: A Celebration of Métis Women and Culture

The project is in honour of Métis women. A Tracy Charette Fehr project.

Le Musée de Saint Boniface Museum is hosting a series of gatherings titled “Honouring Our Mothers Circles” throughout March and April 2024. These events aim to bring together Métis women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals (LGBTQ2) in a shared space for sewing, stitching, and beading.

Celebrating Ancestral Legacy:

  • Participants will have the opportunity to honor their female ancestors, including mothers, grandmothers, and sisters, by stitching their names onto pieces of fabric, fur, or hide.
  • These gatherings will foster a sense of community through storytelling, knowledge sharing, and the development of artistic skills.

Creative Expression and Cultural Significance:

  • The completed art pieces will be displayed at the museum in September, coinciding with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
  • This project serves as a tribute to Métis women and aims to revitalize traditional art forms like beading, quillwork, and embroidery.
  • Engaging in creative activities can offer stress relief, increased confidence, and a stronger sense of identity.

Métis women, girls and gender diverse/LGBTQ2:

  • The circles utilize culturally specific materials like thread, beads, and quills to connect participants to their heritage.
  • No prior experience is necessary, making the program accessible to a wider audience.
  • Multiple sessions are available throughout the year, both in-person (at the museum) and online.

Building a Stronger Community:

  • The organizer’s vision is to foster cultural bonds and empower participants through collaborative art creation.
  • The completed pieces will not only represent the artistic expression of the participants but also serve as a tribute to the women whose names are woven into the artwork.

Participation Information:

  • Free to attend with all supplies included.
  • Registration is encouraged, and participants can sign up for multiple sessions.
  • Online participation options are available on select dates.

This initiative provides a unique opportunity for Métis women, girls, and LGBTQ2 individuals to connect with their cultural heritage, celebrate the legacy of their ancestors, and engage in a meaningful artistic experience within a supportive community.
