Winnipeg Public Library to Expand Hours And Services In 2024

If you are a book lover, a student, a researcher, or just looking for a cozy place to spend some time, you will be happy to hear that the Winnipeg Public Library is planning to expand its hours and services in 2024. Thanks to a $3.4 million funding boost from the provincial government, the city’s draft budget proposes to invest over $7 million in the library system, which will benefit all Winnipeggers.

More Library Hours

One of the most exciting changes is the increase in library hours across the board. Starting from September 2024, all 20 library branches will be open on Wednesdays year-round, adding 12 per cent more hours overall. This means that you will have more opportunities to access the library’s resources, programs, and staff.

In addition, four more libraries – Bill and Helen Norrie, Charleswood, Louis Riel, and Transcona – will join the five currently open on Sundays from September to May, boosting the Sunday hours by 50 per cent. This will make it easier for you to visit the library on weekends, especially if you live in those areas.

However, the Millennium Library will not be open on Sundays year-round, and all libraries will remain closed on Sundays during the summer months. The city says this is due to the lower demand and the need to balance the budget.

More Library Materials and Programs

Another benefit of the increased funding is the enhancement of the library’s collections and programs. The budget allocates an extra $465,500 for books and other materials, which will allow the library to update and diversify its offerings. Whether you are looking for the latest bestsellers, the classics, or something in between, you will find something to suit your taste and interest.

The budget also provides $134,500 for new programming, which will enable the library to offer more educational, cultural, and recreational activities for all ages and backgrounds. You can expect to see more workshops, lectures, book clubs, storytimes, and other events that will enrich your library experience.

More Library Security and Safety

The city is also committed to improving the security and safety of the library staff and patrons. The budget earmarks $1.8 million for various security measures, such as cameras, alarms, and guards. The city also plans to partner with Fearless R2W, a non-profit organization that provides culturally appropriate support and advocacy for families and individuals in need. The goal is to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone who visits the library.

A New Library in the Northwest

Last but not least, the budget includes $4.7 million for the construction of a new library in the northwest of the city, which is expected to open in September 2025. The new library will serve the growing population in that area, which currently lacks a nearby branch. The city says the new library will be leased, rather than owned, to save costs and increase flexibility.

The new library will offer the same services and programs as the other branches, as well as some unique features that will reflect the needs and preferences of the community. The city will consult with the public and stakeholders to determine the location, design, and name of the new library.
