Manitoba Government Making Downtown Winnipeg Streets Safer with Significant Investment
Downtown Winnipeg has seen a rise in violent crime, making people feel unsafe. The Manitoba government is taking action to address this issue and ensure the safety of its citizens.
What is the plan?
The plan is to invest $10 million over two years in downtown Winnipeg safety measures, which include:
- 24 new officers for foot patrols in areas such as The Forks and the Exchange District.
- 75 new cameras, bringing the downtown total to 100, for more surveillance and deterrence.
- New all-purpose vehicles for police to respond quickly and effectively to incidents.
- A new downtown safety office for police and community partners to co-ordinate their efforts.
- More lighting and signage in downtown areas for better visibility and accessibility.
- A $3.6 million contribution to the Downtown Community Safety Partnership (DCSP), a collaborative community initiative to create a safer, more inviting downtown Winnipeg.

Why is this important?
This is important because downtown Winnipeg is facing a serious crime problem that affects the quality of life and well-being of its residents and visitors. According to the Winnipeg Police Service’s annual report, total crime increased by 25.6 per cent and violent crime rose by 19.2 per cent in 2022 compared to the previous year. The plan aims to restore public confidence and trust in downtown Winnipeg as a safe and vibrant place.
What are the benefits?
The benefits are:
- More police presence and visibility in downtown areas, which will increase public safety and security.
- More tools and technology for police to prevent, detect and respond to crime, which will improve their efficiency and effectiveness.
- Less crime in downtown areas, which will reduce the frequency and severity of criminal activity.
- More detection and prosecution of offenders, which will hold them accountable and discourage recidivism.
- Support for community partners who deliver outreach services to vulnerable populations and promote a holistic approach to downtown safety, which will create a more welcoming and inclusive downtown environment.
