Slurpee Capital News for Winnipeg

Look, say what you will about our “Slurpee Capital” title, but it’s part of the Winnipeg DNA. Honestly, after the last couple of years, I think we all needed some news that wasn't about another local spot locking its doors for good.

So, Mayor Gillingham gave his State of the City address today (March 5), and he dropped a bit of a bombshell: 7-Eleven might actually be expanding here again. I know, I know—it feels like just yesterday we were watching those orange-and-green signs coming down all over the city.

Back in late '24, it felt pretty grim with all the talk about retail theft and security issues forcing those closures. It felt like a bit of a hit to our civic pride, frankly.

Here’s the “Tea” (or the Slurpee?)

The Mayor says the chain is looking at opening a handful of new franchise spots. He didn't drop a map with “X” marks the spot—so don’t go hunting for a Big Bite in your backyard just yet—but the vibe shift is real.

To have a global giant like 7-Eleven go from “we're out” to “let's grow” in just two years is a massive vote of confidence for Winnipeg. It’s like they’re finally seeing the potential we know is here.

Why this actually matters for us

  • The Comeback Kid Energy: If they’re willing to reinvest, it means they think the safety and economic stuff is finally trending in the right direction.
  • More than just Milk: New spots mean more entry-level jobs for the neighborhood and one less boarded-up storefront to walk past.
  • Downtown Buzz: Gillingham also spent a lot of time talking about those hundreds of new housing units planned for downtown. If people are moving back in, they’re gonna need somewhere to grab a snack at 11 PM.

Don’t Get Too Hyped Yet

We’re still in the “announcement” phase. We don't have timelines, and we definitely don't know how they plan to handle the security side of things this time around. Winnipeggers are a “believe it when I see it” bunch, and rightfully so.

Still, it’s nice to hear some news that isn't just “everything is closing.” It feels like the city might be getting its groove back.

Keep your eyes peeled—if you see any familiar stripes going up on a vacant lot in your neighborhood, you’ll know the Mayor wasn't just whistling Dixie.
