CanMade: A Handy App for Finding Canadian-Made Products

With the 25% tariffs on Canadian goods making headlines, a lot of people are looking for ways to support local businesses and keep more of their money in Canada. But let’s be honest—it’s not always easy to tell what’s actually made here. Labels can be confusing, and big stores don’t always make it clear. That’s where CanMade, a new app created by a guy from Manitoba, comes in. It’s designed to help people find Canadian-made products quickly and easily, just by scanning a barcode.

Why This App Exists (And Who Made It)

CanMade was created by Hashim Farooq, a developer from Brandon, Manitoba, who saw firsthand how tough it can be to figure out which products are truly Canadian. He wanted an easier way for people to shop local—without having to dig through labels or memorize which brands are Canadian-owned. So, he built an app that does the work for you. Pretty cool, right?

How CanMade Works

It’s super simple to use:

Scan the barcode – Point your phone at a product’s barcode, and the app will tell you whether it’s Canadian-made.

Check product details – Get info on where the product comes from, plus suggestions for other Canadian alternatives.

Track your shopping habits – The app can even show you what percentage of your grocery list is made up of Canadian products.

It’s a great way to be more mindful about what’s going into the cart—without spending extra time searching.

Why It Matters Right Now

With these new tariffs in place, a lot of Canadian businesses could use the extra support. Buying Canadian means keeping jobs in the country, strengthening local economies, and, in some cases, even reducing the environmental impact of shipping goods from far away.

Plus, knowing where products come from just feels empowering. It’s nice to have a choice and not just grab whatever’s on the shelf without thinking about it.

How to Spot Canadian-Made Products (Even Without the App)

If you don’t have CanMade yet, here are some things to look for when shopping:

  • “Product of Canada” – This means that almost all of the ingredients and labor used to make the product are from Canada.
  • “Made in Canada” – This means at least 51% of the production cost was spent in Canada, but some ingredients might come from elsewhere.
  • Look for Canadian brands – Some brands are proudly Canadian but might not be labeled as such, so it helps to research a little.

Want to Try It?

If supporting Canadian products is important, this app is worth checking out. It’s available for download, and since it’s built by someone who actually cares about the cause, it feels like a tool made for the people, by the people. CanMade is available on the Apple App Store, and it’s free to use. It’s definitely worth a shot, especially for those looking to make more Canadian-conscious purchases.
