Winnipeg Police Warn Residents of Speeding Ticket and E-Transfer Scams

Winnipeg residents are advised to be cautious of two scams making the rounds, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.

Speeding Ticket Scam Targets Drivers:

The first scam involves text messages claiming recipients were caught speeding. These messages often state the location of the alleged violation (frequently in school zones) and provide a link for immediate “payment processing.”

Police emphasize this is a scam. The City of Winnipeg does not issue speeding tickets via text messages.

Here’s how to protect yourself:

  • Do not click on the link in the text message.
  • Do not attempt any payment.
  • Delete the message immediately.
  • Block the sender’s number.

E-Transfer Scam Targets Online Transactions:

The second scam involves deceptive E-Transfer notifications.

The scheme: Individuals receive emails stating a buyer intends to send money electronically. The email then prompts the recipient to enter their financial institution and personal information to “finalize” the E-Transfer.

Safeguarding Yourself:

  • Never share your financial information through unverified emails.
  • For regular transactions: Utilize the auto-deposit feature offered by some platforms, but be cautious of fake auto-deposit messages.
  • Transacting with strangers?
    • Insist on meeting in a public, well-lit location (police station, supermarket).
    • Bring someone for added security.
    • Always prioritize cash for the transaction.

Victims of Scams Urged to Report:

If you have been targeted by either of these scams, the Winnipeg Police Service urges you to file a report online. Additionally, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) to report the incident.
