Winnipeg, MB is under a tornado watch as of 4:21 p.m. CDT Wednesday 26 July 2023. According to Environment Canada, conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may produce tornadoes. Severe thunderstorms may also produce strong winds, large hail and heavy rain.
This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Here’s how to stay safe:
Before a tornado
- Have an emergency kit and a family emergency plan ready.
- Monitor the weather alerts and forecasts by Environment Canada on their website or on the Weather Can App.
- Use #MBSTORM to report severe weather on social media when safe.
- Identify the safest place in your home or building to take shelter. This should be a room on the lowest floor, away from outside walls and windows.
- If you live in a mobile home or other temporary shelter, move to a strong building if possible. If not, lie in a low spot and protect your head.
During a tornado
- Go to your designated safe place and stay there until the danger has passed.
- If indoors, avoid windows, doors and outside walls. Crouch down and cover your head.
- If outdoors, seek shelter in a nearby building or lie flat in a low spot and cover your head.
- If in a car, get out and seek shelter in a nearby building or ditch. Do not stay in your car.
