On the evening of June 24, 2023, at approximately 6:50 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service received a distress call reporting a coyote attack in the vicinity of Sunny Morning Road.
According to initial reports, a 15-year-old girl and her 9-year-old brother had a terrifying encounter with a coyote while walking in the area. As the siblings noticed the approaching coyote, they attempted to flee, but unfortunately, the younger boy was mauled before a nearby resident intervened and scared the coyote away.
Following the attack, the injured child was provided medical assistance. The 9-year-old boy sustained multiple injuries but is currently in stable condition after receiving treatment at a local hospital. The Winnipeg Police Service is actively collaborating with the Conservation Officer Service to investigate the incident and ensure appropriate actions are taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The incident serves as a reminder to the public about the potential risks associated with wildlife encounters, particularly with coyotes. The Winnipeg Police Service urges individuals to remain vigilant and follow essential safety measures when in the vicinity of coyotes or other wild animals. One effective technique, known as hazing, involves becoming large and loud to deter the animal. Examples of hazing techniques include raising a jacket or another piece of clothing above your head to appear larger and shouting loudly. Alternatively, carrying a safety whistle can also help create noise to ward off coyotes and attract attention.
