If you're a dog lover in Winnipeg, there's a nice way to brighten up your day and help a furry friend in need. Winnipeg Animal Services has a Doggie Dates program, which allows residents to take an adoptable dog out for a day, a weekend, or even a whole week of fun and adventure.

The concept of the Doggie Dates program is simple yet innovative. It provides an opportunity for residents to take a dog out of the shelter environment and give them some much-needed exercise, socialization, and love. Plus, it also increases the chances of the dog being adopted by exposing them to potential forever homes.

Under this program, residents can take an adoptable dog out to various places such as parks, events, and even to their workplace. The dogs are dressed in an “adopt me” vest and a sparkling pet license for their doggie date, making them easily identifiable to the public. It also helps promote adoption by raising awareness of the shelter's mission and goals.

To participate in the program, a fully refundable deposit is required. The deposit is equivalent to the adoption fee and can be made using a debit or credit card. Once a participant successfully returns a dog, there is no deposit required for future Doggie Dates. The deposit ensures the safety and wellbeing of the dog and serves as a guarantee that they will be returned to the shelter.

It's worth noting that no appointment is necessary to participate in the program. Participants can simply visit Animal Services during Doggie Date pick-up hours, which are from noon to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 4:30 p.m. on weekends. However, it is advisable to contact 311 or visit Animal Services to learn more or schedule a doggie date.

In addition, Animal Services encourages residents to bring an item or two from their Wish List when they visit. The Wish List includes items such as blankets, toys, treats, and more, all of which are useful in providing care and comfort to the animals in the shelter.

Overall, the Doggie Dates program is an excellent initiative that benefits both dogs and residents alike. It provides an opportunity to spread awareness about Animal Services' mission and goals, promotes adoption, and most importantly, gives dogs the love and care they deserve. So, why not take a dog out for a date and make their day a little brighter? Who knows, it might even lead to a lifelong friendship!
