The Winnipeg Police Service has issued a warning about a travelling fraud and theft ring targeting residents across the city. These scammers are using distraction techniques to steal valuables in broad daylight and busy public areas.
🕵️ Tactics Used
- Approaching people at gas stations, parking lots, malls, or banks
- Starting with friendly requests (directions, gas money, etc.)
- Offering fake gold jewellery or knockoff “iPhones” in return
- A second scammer may quietly steal jewellery or valuables during the distraction
🚗 Key Patterns
- They work in groups, not alone
- Often use vehicles with out-of-province licence plates
- May have children with them to appear trustworthy
- Operate in daylight and in busy, public areas
