Winter in Winnipeg is known for its freezing temperatures and abundant snow, but as the season begins to change, so do the outdoor activities available to residents and visitors. Unfortunately, that means the closure of some of Winnipeg’s most beloved winter attractions, including the Nestaweya River Trail.
However, as the temperatures begin to warm up, the river ice starts to melt, making it unsafe for recreational activities. As a result, the Nestaweya River Trail has announced the closure of two sections of the trail for the season.
The first section of the trail to close is the portion from Hugo Docks to Donald Street Bridge on the Assiniboine River. This includes the skating, walking, and skiing trails, and access points in this area are also closed. Today, March 11, The Forks announced the closure of another section of the trail, from Churchill Drive to the Norwood Bridge on the Red River. The Forks has also stopped monitoring ice thickness in this section.

Despite these closures, there are still sections of the Nestaweya River Trail that are open to the public. The Red River portion of the trail, from The Forks to Queen Elizabeth Way, remains open, as does the Assiniboine portion from the Donald Street Bridge to the Norwood Bridge.
As Winnipeggers say goodbye to another winter, it’s important to remember that safety should always come first. While it’s disappointing to see some sections of the Nestaweya River Trail close for the season, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors and stay active in the city. So, bundle up, grab some hot cocoa, and find a new winter adventure to enjoy until next year’s skating season arrives!
