Big Snow or Just a Dusting? Winnipeg’s Forecast Hangs in the Balance

Snow Is on the Way, Winnipeg — But How Much? Here’s What We Know (March 27–28)

Hey Winnipeg! Just a quick update if you haven’t seen the weather alerts yet — there’s a pretty decent chance we’ll see some heavy snow later this week, but the key word here is chance.

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for our area, and while things are still up in the air (literally), there’s potential for 10 to 20 cm of snow starting Thursday afternoon (March 27) and lasting through Friday night (March 28).

So… how much snow are we getting?

Here’s the thing: Winnipeg is sitting right on the edge of the zone that could get the heaviest snow. That means the amount we get could really vary, depending on which way the storm moves.

Seriously — a slight shift in the storm’s path could mean the difference between a light snowfall or a full-on snow dump.

Even Environment Canada mentioned there’s still uncertainty about exactly how much snow Winnipeg will get. Cities like Brandon and parts of western and south-central Manitoba are more likely to be right in the thick of it, but we’re not far off.

So if you’re wondering whether this will be a shovel-the-driveway-twice kind of storm or just a “meh, slushy sidewalks” situation — it’s still too early to say for sure

What could happen if we do get the heavy stuff?

If the snow hits us hard, we’re looking at:

  • Reduced visibility

  • Slippery roads

  • Localized blowing snow, especially in open areas or highways

Travel conditions could go downhill starting Thursday evening and continue through Friday, so keep that in mind if you’ve got appointments, errands, or plans to be on the road.

Snowfall warning? Maybe.

Because of the uncertainty, there aren’t any snowfall warnings yet — but they’ll likely be issued for parts of southern Manitoba once the storm track becomes clearer. It’s one of those classic “wait and see” Prairie weather moments.

Stay weather-aware

Your best bet is to check the Environment Canada website over the next couple days and follow the #MBStorm hashtag on social media for updates from people across the province. If you’re out and about and see sketchy weather, you can also report it to MBstorm@ec.gc.ca or call 1-800-239-0484.
