If you are looking for a fun and educational activity in Winnipeg, Manitoba, you might want to check out the Air Force Heritage Museum and Air Park. This attraction displays aircraft and artifacts related to the history of the Canadian Air Force, as well as memorials to those who served and trained under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The air park has the largest permanent display of Canadian military aircraft in Canada. Here are some reasons why you should visit this amazing place.

The Outdoor Air Park

The outdoor air park is open 24/7, 365 days per year, so you can visit it anytime you want. It consists of 11 aircraft, including the only Challenger on exhibit in Canada. The Challenger was a prototype air transport that was used for VIP flights and scientific missions. You can also see other types of aircraft, such as fighters, trainers, helicopters and anti-submarine warfare planes. The park is located at 186 Air Force Way, Winnipeg, MB

Some of the highlights are:

  • CF 116 Freedom Fighter: a supersonic fighter that was used by Canada from 1968 to 1995.
  • CF-104 Starfighter: a sleek interceptor/fighter that could fly at Mach 2.2 and reach altitudes of over 80,000 feet.
  • CF-101 Voodoo: a twin-engine interceptor that was armed with nuclear-tipped missiles and could fly at Mach 1.8.
  • F86 Sabre Mk. VI: a jet fighter that was used by Canada during the Korean War and the Cold War.
  • CT-133 Silver Star: a trainer that was derived from the Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star, one of the most successful jet trainers in history.

The Museum

The museum is located inside the 1 Canadian Air Division Headquarters and is open for tours by appointment from Monday to Friday during the summer. You can call 204-833-2500 ext. 5993 to book your visit. The museum has a collection of artifacts that showcase the history and heritage of the Canadian Air Force.

The museum also has exhibits on topics such as women in aviation, air search and rescue, peacekeeping operations and space exploration.
