Event Description
Everyone is invited to a free community BBQ on Sunday, August 14, 2022 from 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm where we will share stories of St. James and officially introduce the City of Winnipeg’s newest mural.
There’s something new and big in St. James, yet at the same time it’s old; in fact, it is 100 years in the making. 2021 commemorated the 100th anniversary of the R.M. of St. James. Striking a St. James 100 committee brought local community organizations together. They applied for some grants and an idea for a mural to acknowledge the centennial was born. This capital project is a full-colour commemorative mural commissioned by a local artist, Jen Mosienko, and will highlight St. James’ past, present and future. The mural brings art, history, and vibrancy to our community.
“Working with local mural artist, Jennifer Mosienko, and also a resident of St. James, along with her mentee Morgan Biggs, is such a treat and blessing,” says Kristi Meek, President | Executive Director of the Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce, and manager of the project. “From sharing the committee’s ideas of showcasing St. James’ history, acknowledging landmarks in the area, and welcoming visitors to St. James, the idea of a postcard came to life, and Jen nailed the design.” The mural spells out the neighbourhood’s name, with each letter representing a different industry and landmark.
