Manitoba Day 2018 @ Manitoba Museum – Free Admission

Join us, along with our presenting sponsor, Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, on May 12, 2018 for a special celebration of Manitoba’s 147th Birthday!

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

  • FREE ADMISSION to the Museum Galleries, Science Gallery, and Planetarium shows all day long!
  • ATTEND the Arts, Culture, Heritage and Science Fair in Alloway Hall
  • CREATE your own “space” crafts.
  • ENJOY the It’s the Small Things Scavenger Hunt in the Museum Galleries and for a chance to win a fabulous prize prided by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries
  • INVESTIGATE the new Unlocked: Stories of the Interlake exhibit in the Upper Parklands Gallery
  • VOTE for your favourite cake in the Cake-a-toba cake decorating contest in Alloway Hall
  • VISIT the Parks Canada booth for a chance to picture yourself at a National Park
  • WITNESS historical re-enactors of La Compagnie de La Vérendrye and Forces of Lord Selkirk
  • WATCH the formal program with greetings from dignitaries at 3 pm in Alloway Hall

PLANETARIUM SCHEDULE

Perfect Little Planet • 11:30 am • Discover our solar system through a new set of eyes – a family from another star system seeking the perfect vacation spot. Fly over the surface of Pluto. Dive over the ice cliffs of Miranda. Sail through the rings of Saturn. Feel the lightning storms of Jupiter. Walk on the surface of Mars. Which destination would you choose? This 35-minute show is a solar system journey for space travelers of all ages.

 A Brief Mystery of Time (Laser Matinée) • 1:00pm • A humorous program about science, history and our cultural perceptions of time. Astronomical topics in-clude black holes, worm holes, the speed of light and the possibilities of time travel. Story sections are inter-spersed with entertaining songs. Songs Include:
Weird Science – Oingo Boingo

Back in Time – Huey Lewis and the News

Time Warp – Rocky Horror Picture Show

Cosmic Girl – Jamiroquai

Fly Like an Eagle – Seal

Planet Hunters • 2 pm & 4 pm • A brand-new planetarium show that explores the new worlds being dis-covered by modern astronomy. More than 1,000 new planets have been discovered orbiting other stars in our galaxy. Planet Hunters explains the science behind these new discoveries, which include “Hot Jupiters”, icy planets, and ocean worlds that might harbor the building blocks of life. This 40-minute show includes a brief night sky update featuring the locations of the latest planet discoveries.

 

Peter and the Wolf • 3 pm • Opus 67: A Musical Tale for Children, Text by Prokofiev. The classic symphony by Prokofiev, beautifully brought to life with laser animation. The story has been translated from the original Russian into English and is read by Sting.

 

PLEASE NOTE: Planetarium shows are first-come first-served and have a limited capacity.  For the safety and enjoyment of all our visitors, once a show has begun latecomers will not be admitted and visitors leaving the show will not be re-admitted.
