Dark Sky Weekend

We’re turning off the lights for this event! Join Parks Canada and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada for a weekend full of activities under the star filled skies of Riding Mountain. Learn about the Milky Way from the pros, look up at Anishinabe constellations, view the sky with binoculars, and party under the stars.

Friday
Lights out in the Park, Dark Sky launch party
10 p.m. at Central Park by the Clear Lake beach | Free | Come and go
Literally though. We’re shutting off the lights in Central Park by Clear Lake beach for a free telescope viewing with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC).

Saturday
Daytime kids’ activities
1 – 4 p.m. at Central Park by the Clear Lake beach | Free | Come and go
Join RASC interpreters to safely view the sun through a solar telescope and participate in some free, hands on kids activities. At 2, join a Parks Canada interpreter and build your own Star Catcher to help you navigate the night sky. 

Yoga at Dark
9 p.m. at Aspen | 1 hour | Free | Pre-registration required
Hear the waves crash against the shore and the crickets chirp as you slowly go from warrior one to warrior two, with Alisa Hobbs from Healing Minds, Healing Bodies. Yoga at Dark is a free event along the shores of Clear Lake at the Aspen picnic area. Make sure you bring water, a mat, and a flashlight. Please register by emailing julie.perrett@pc.gc.ca as there is a maximum of 40 people.Dibikoh Giizhigoong – The Ancient Night Sky 

8:30 p.m. at Lake Audy | 1.5 hours | $7.30 | Pre-registration required
The Anishinabe have always had a direct connection to the stars. Learn and see how the stars provided an education system since the beginning of time. Pre-registration required at the Visitor Centre 1.5 hours before program start. Meet at the Lake Audy north Bison Range Parking lot.
What to bring: bug spray, comfortable walking shoes, appropriate clothing for weather

Sunday

Ominnik After Dark
8:30 p.m. – 11 p.m. at Ominnik Marsh | $34.30
Snacks, mocktails, telescopes, and Ominnik Marsh at night. Need we say more? Explore Ominnik Marsh after dark while a Parks Canada interpreter guides your way. Your nose might be the real guide. Several stops along the way have been set-up for visitors to enjoy a presentation by a member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and a snack and mocktail provided by Vaughn’s Catering. Continue your way to Boat Cove where members of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada have set-up telescopes for night sky viewing. No flashlights or headlamps.

For the safety of the telescopes, we ask that you leave your pets at home.

12+ years of age suggested. Tickets can be purchased at the Visitor Centre between 9:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. or rmnp.info@pc.gc.ca.

Navigating the stars
9 p.m. – 11 p.m. | At the Boat Cove | Free

Peer through a powerful telescope and discover the night sky with astronomy experts. Presented by Riding Mountain National Park and the Royals Astronomical Society of Canada.
For the safety of the telescopes, we ask that you leave your pets at home.
