A week of winter cycling adventure for beginners to pros at The Forks!

Chill out and keep warm riding your bike on the Red River Mutual Trail this winter with Big Bike Chill February 8-17th, kicking off with Winter Bike to Work Day and offers two (or three!) wheeled experiences for the whole family, as well as Winnipeg’s first urban fat tire bike trail.

Winter Bike to Work Day
The International Winter Bike to Work Day began in Winnipeg seven years ago. Pledge to ride HERE.

Winter Bike to Work Day Pit Stop, 4:00-6:00pm
Visit a pit stop at Pavilion Sub-Zero at The Forks Historic Port co-hosted by Bike Week Winnipeg and The WRENCH (Winnipeg Repair Education and Cycling Hub) for information on winter riding, free repairs and some snacks!

Winter Bike to Work Day Group Ride
Interested in a group ride? Register here and join Bike Winnipeg on a ride that meets at The Cube, tours The Exchange District and ends at The Forks. This ride is open for all, and is a great way to test out winter riding!

Fat Fridays Group Ride with Woodcock, 6:00-9:30pm
Meet at Woodcock Cycleworks on Saint Mary’s Road at 6:00pm for a group ride ending at The Forks before turning back. This is a great chance to explore the city via a fat tire bike. Bring your own, or rent from the shop. Rides are 20-50kms long at 14-20kms/h. Register HERE.

Jack Frost Challenge Try It Out Day, 1:00-4:00pm
To wrap-up the eighth annual Jack Frost Challenge, Green Action Centre presents Try it Out Day! Green Action Centre’s sustainable transportation team will be set up on the river from 1-4 pm to provide visitors with the opportunities to try out fat bikes, snowshoes and other winter sporting equipment for free. Hot chocolate, educational resources, and enthusiasm for winter activities will be provided! The equipment is generously provided by Wilderness Supply Co. and White Pine Bicycle Co.

Beat the Cold Winter Triathalon by 1JustCity, 9:00am-1:00pm
Beat the Cold for people experiencing homelessness on the coldest nights of winter. The first-ever Beat the Cold Winter Triathlon will feature a 5 km run, 5 km bike and a 5 km skate along the river trails at The Forks. Race all three sports solo or find two friends and enter as a relay team Your participation will help support 1JustCity’s overnight emergency warming centre, Just a Warm Sleep. On nights below -10 C from January through March, Just a Warm Sleep invites people experiencing homelessness into the basement of Augustine United Church to get a safe, warm sleep and toiletry kit. This program is run by volunteers but supports up to 25 people experiencing homelessness nightly.

Always wanted to try out Fat Biking? Now’s your chance. Ride one of The Forks’ fat bike trails on one of Woodcock’s Fat Bikes. See if cycling’s fast growing discipline is for you! The kiosk will be located near Pavilion Sub-Zero in The Forks Historic Port.

Pedal Powered Performances, 1:00-4:00pm
Ride a rickshaw and enjoy one-on-one entertainment brought to you by Walk & Talk Theatre Company. Rides start and end in The Plaza.

Fat Tire Bike Race by 2 Wheel Revolution
Put your pedals to the metal and compete in a fat tire bike race on The Forks’ trails. Racers are invited to check in at 10:00am in the Green Room behind the CN Stage. Meeting to follow at 10:30, with first race heats starting at 11:30. The day will wind up with beverage and lunch service at 1:30pm and the Trophy Presentation at 2:00pm. Register HERE.

Go Dutch! 7:00-7:45pm and 8:00-8:45pm
Valentines Date Night on the river! Facilitated by Winnipeg Trails Association and Plain Bikes, come and ride an imported Dutch Bike down the river with your valentine! This group ride will include cozy beverages, photoesque backdrops (great for proposals and selfies) and pillow talk about the history of The Warming Huts. Plus, the first 10 couples to sign up get a $20 gift certificate to warm up in The Common post ride. Register HERE.

Bikes & Brunch, Moveable Feast hosted by the Downtown Biz, 12:00-5:00pm
Be a true Winnipegger and conquer the Winter-blues with this tour of downtown’s best brunch spots using a winterized or fat bike! The tour price ($50) includes fat bike rental from White Pines (in Johnston Terminal) and lunch/brunch samples at two stops! Book a spot HERE.

Ice Bike Race, 2:00pm
Sign up on site for the first ever Ice Bike Race. The Ice Bikes were donated by UMCycle  and designed by Chris Pancoe (one half of the winning Warming Hut 2019 design team). The race will be located near the Pavilion Sub-Zero in The Forks Historic Port.

Big Chill Ice Jam
A winter bike jam on the river! In keeping with the spirit of Winnipeg’s illustrious Bike Jams….stay tuned for details!

Letter Peddler Press in The Market
Warm up after your bike ride on the river and make some art on the 2nd floor of the Market. Letter Peddler Press is a portable letterpress postcard printing cart. Participants are able to assemble and print their own Winnipeg-themed postcard on its small sign press using custom laser cut bamboo press blocks. Donations accepted.

Actif Epica Ends

Art and  Warming Hut Tour Ride, 10:30am and 12:00pm
Join Sputnik Architecture, the minds behind the Warming Hut competition, for a fat tire ride along the Red River Mutual Trail. The event is co-hosted by Bike Winnipeg and The Forks’ Recreation Coordinator, Lindsay Somers, so riders can try out fat tire riding while learning about Winnipeg’s most famous (and unique) art and architecture competition (on ice!). Fat tire bikes will be provided free of charge for the first ten participants who request one. Letter Peddler Press in The Market

Crafting with the  W.R.E.N.C.H. (Winnipeg Repair Education and Cycling Hub) 2pm-5pm
At this DIY art workshop participants will make fun and unique creations (such as jewellery, ornaments and key chains) out of upcycled bicycle parts like inner tubes and chains. Materials and tools will be provided.
