Set in a single room of the Coverly family’s country house in Derbyshire, ARCADIA moves between 1809 – where brilliant 13-year-old Lady Thomasina proposes a startling scientific theory to her tutor Septimus, while her mother unwillingly oversees the transformation of her traditional English garden to the “modern” Gothic style — and the present day, when Hannah and Bernard, two competing scholars, are researching the estate’s Regency period and debating the likelihood that Lord Byron created a scandal here 200 years ago.
Within the framework of the highly entertaining romantic sagas of characters both past and present, ARCADIA explores a multiplicity of personal, philosophical and scientific themes, examining the principles of mathematics, literary analysis, historical research, sex, and garden landscape.
